El Paso Weather
If you have ever been to El Paso or the area around it then you may already have figured out that the weather you experienced is hot desert climate. The city of El Paso feels as much as the desert as any city in the United States. There is little rain every year and the summers can get extremely hot. The humidity is not an issue, but the temperatures are high enough that it does not matter. The winters on the other hand are mild, pleasant and dry. The city also experiences flash floods because of powerful storms that are created when moisture from the gulf and even from the Pacific Ocean reaches the area. When such an event happens, El Paso weather can experience severe thunderstorms.
The Sun City
Once you have spent a few days in El Paso it is easy to see where the nickname of Sun City comes from. The city sees sunshine an average of 302 days every year. That means that El Paso weather will see a total over 80 percent of daylight hours. The summer months are the ones that see the most sunshine with June seeing the most hours of sun. Although there are four seasons in El Paso weather they are all sunny. December is the month with the lowest amount of sunshine with a total of 244.9. That amount however is higher than some city highs in the northern part of the United States. The average hours of sunshine per year in el Paso is 3,759.6.
Is That Snow
Even with the warm weather, El Paso does see some snow, although not much. The reason that El Paso does see snow is that it is located at a high altitude. These storms are rare, but they do happen. In most cases the city will see a dusting to a little over half an inch. The average snowfall is the highest in January when the monthly average is just under an inch per year followed by February which averages .5 in of snow every year.
There may not be that much rain in El Paso weather, but the city can have floods due to the severe summer thunderstorms. One of the best examples of recent flooding in the city happened back in the summer of 2006 when rain fell for a week with totals of over 15 inches. In one week El Paso saw 6 inches of rain over the yearly average and that made the reservoirs overflow and a major flood struck the city. The damages totaled 98 million dollars. The flood happened because of the bad drainage in the city and because the reservoir were not ready to handle the amount of rain seen in 2006. The flood happened at the end of July and the beginning of August which are the wettest months in El Paso weather.
The average high temperatures in El Paso weather even when you factor in the possibility of cold winters is still higher than most. The average high for the year is 78.09 F while the average low is 51.10 F. The temperatures as you may imagine in desert weather can be much higher than that with the record high for the city being 114 F.
