Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and the capital city of Catalonia. It is one of the biggest tourist magnets in the country and it is helped by great Barcelona weather. The country is in the Mediterranean and can have hot summers and mild winters. The average temperatures of Barcelona weather are in line with the other cities in the area with an average yearly temperature of 62 F or 16.6 C.
Though it can get chilly at times, Barcelona remains one of the most popular destinations in Europe. The reason for that is that when you compare its weather to that in other parts of Europe it can be a lot milder in the winter. The summers can be really hot, but at least there is the Mediterranean Sea where people can cool off on those very hot summer days in Barcelona.
The Winter Is A Big Draw
There are advantages that the Barcelona weather provides which other cities do not. The winter still attracts a lot of tourists because even though the temperatures drop, the average is still 53 F. That temperature is not the only factor that people come to Barcelona for. The winters here are for the most part dry and you get mostly sunny days. When other countries in Europe are seeing a lot of snow, Barcelona weather provides sunny mild days and a great view tops it all off.
The winter runs from November and it ends in February. You should still be prepared for cooler temperatures and some rain, but overall the winter will be fine. The water temperature in the winter can be qualified as cool with the average temperature ranging from 8 C to 17 C. Most of the rain will not happen in the winter months; that happens in October.
As the year passes and July arrives the temperatures rise significantly. Barcelona weather in the summer can be something you want to run away from. The good news is that there are plenty of beaches you can cool down by and the nights bring life to the city. August can be really hot with the mercury reaching the high 30 C. You will notice that at this time a lot of the locals flee the city for cooler temperatures.
The good news is that August is the month with the third highest amount of rain in Barcelona weather. Not a lot of people enjoy a rain shower during their vacation, but with temperatures as high as they get in the city, a downpour is seen as a blessing. No such luck for July as the seventh month of the year has the lowest rainfall average in the city of Barcelona.
While the hot days of August in Barcelona weather are the ones that bring the rain, the rain does not stop when August does. September and October are a great time to visit Barcelona as far as the temperature goes because the mercury starts dropping but not low enough to avoid the beautiful beaches. The problem with September and October is that you do get most of the rain during these months.
The average rainfall in September is 85 mm while October is the rainiest month at 91 mm. The rain can in these two months come down hard but the storms are not long lasting. Most of the time the skies will clear fast and you will be ready to enjoy the rest of the day. Barcelona has an average of 90 days of rainfall, but nothing that will last for days. Though snow has been seen in Barcelona weather it is extremely rare.
Other Things To Look Out For
Another thing that you should know about Barcelona weather is the possibility of dust and sand storms. This is one of those things that a lot of cities in the Mediterranean Sea see. The sand and dost are not local. They come from the Sahara which is on the other side of the Mediterranean. When the winds blow from south to north there is a possibility of sand or dust storms which can be a problem for people with respiratory issues.
Flights and driving can be affected during these dust and sand storms so plan accordingly. Another weather problem in Barcelona is water spouts which when they go into water become tornados. This phenomenon is rare but it has happened in Barcelona in the recent past so it is worth noting. Overall Barcelona weather is some of the best you will find in Europe and not many things will surprise many people when they visit.
